Too much haste on Kwinana waste incinerator

Italian incineratorKwinana has been targeted as the site for Australia’s first high temperature industrial waste incinerator.  Concerns over contamination risks to the community prompted Lynn to ask a question in parliament last week about potential dangerous emissions, and frankly the government’s response was less than comforting.

According to Liberal MLC for South Metropolitan Region, Phil Edman, Moltoni Energy, aka Phoenix Energy are having discussions with the state government regarding developing the incinerator.  These discussions have involved Mr Edman visiting Japan twice this year, once with the Premier, which all looks a little too cosy. The Town of Kwinana and City of Rockingham have distanced themselves from the project, saying they will assess any application they receive, as is their role as a Local Government, but are not part of the push.
We need a strategic plan for waste in Perth based on the Reduce, Recycle and Reuse philosophy.  An incinerator will only serve to foster the throw away mentality while also risking community health.
