Time For Marriage Equality - New Ad To Turn Up Heat On Gillard & Abbott

A national television campaign launched by Getup! and Australian Marriage Equality today will build pressure on the Prime Minister and Opposition Leader to give their members a free-vote on marriage reform, said Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young.

"In recent years we've seen the momentum for marriage equality building.
We've seen the debate move from the streets, to the Parliament. We know a majority of Australians want reform of the Marriage Act and they won't be silenced," said the Greens Spokesperson for Sexuality and Gender Identity, Senator Hanson-Young.

"This television campaign takes things up a notch. It's the next phase in what has been a long campaign and further evidence that this is an issue that won't go away.  It's time Ms Gillard and Mr Abbott let their members have a conscience vote, so that the views of the community can finally be heard."

Hon. Lynn MacLaren MLC said “I strongly support the right of same-sex couples to marry, which is why I’ll be addressing the Rally for Marriage Equality in Perth on 19th March. The Australian Greens are unified in our attitude to same-sex marriage. We believe that same-sex couples should have the same rights as other couples to celebrate their love and commitment through marriage.”

Senator Hanson-Young's Bill to amend the Marriage Act remains on the table in the Senate, waiting for agreement on a conscience vote from all parties.
