Sunday trading shouldn’t be an election issue
The WA Greens spokesperson for Commerce, Hon Lynn MacLaren MLC has expressed her surprise that the Premier intends to make Sunday trading an issue for the next election.
“I believe there are far more important issues for Western Australians,” said Ms MacLaren.
The Greens policies are currently under review, and Ms MacLaren intends to take the matter of Sunday shopping to the Greens membership for their view.
“Personally, as much as I would find it convenient, I think it may be a bridge too far,” said Ms MacLaren.
“There is a tradition in this state of Sunday being sacred for family time, recreational pursuits, sport and rest. Sunday shopping has been limited to specific precincts,” added Ms MacLaren.
“The complete deregulation of Sunday shopping hours may have unintended consequences, especially if it is linked to abolishing penalty rates,” said Ms MacLaren.
“Certainly, if the ALP and Nationals reject the policy, the Premier will need the Greens on side to bring it on,” concluded Ms MacLaren.
