Strong Voices Speak Up Against Uranium Mining in WA

There was a strong strong and vocal turnout for the annual rally against the National Uranium Conference outside the Esplanade Hotel in Fremantle.

Speakers included Senator Scott Ludlam, Dr George Crisp from Doctors for the Environment, Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettitt an Kado Muir (pictured), well-known anthropologist, archaeologist and member of the Ngalia tribe in the Northern Goldfields, home of the proposed Yeelirrie uranium mine.

Lynn MacLaren also stirred up the crowd with her speech about the work the Greens have been doing in the State parliament to keep a lid on this toxic industry.

Union representative and anti-nuclear groups from around Western Australia also addressed the crowd in front of the Esplanade Hotel.

Inside, mining executives and the government were discussiing their plans for the uranium industry.

All the voices told the same story; uranium mining is dangerous to the health of workers and the environment and that nuclear power is not the answer to climate change.

Speakers also talked about the problem of burying nuclear waste and described how it seeps into underground water systems, causing devastating environmental and health problems for thousands of years.
