Protest Against Oil Exploration Off Margaret River

On Saturday May 8 Greens MLC, Lynn MacLaren, gave a speech to a 'Save Our Marine Life' rally in Margaret River, organised by the Surfrider Foundation and the Conservation Council.

On behalf of the Australian Greens, Lynn condemned Federal Government plans to open up our oceans to oil exploration.

Lynn pledged support for the campaign to establish marine sanctuaries, not just for environmental values, but also for the economic values of fisheries, tourism and recreation.  Lynn also pledged her support for a Cape to Cape marine reserve.

The government plans to issue a new oil lease 83kms offshore from Margaret River, in an area designated for assessment for future marine sanctuaries.

Federal Minister for Resources and Energy Martin Ferguson will announce the offshore areas in Brisbane on May 16.

The preceding Thursday in Parliament, Lynn asked State Environment Minister Donna Faragher to explain why an oil tanker was anchored in the Ningaloo Marine Park on ANZAC Day.
