Point Peron Marina- Strategic Environmental Review

Question Without Notice No. 309 asked in the Legislative Council on 26 May 2010 by Hon Lynn Maclaren

Parliament:
38 Session: 1

POINT PERON MARINA — STRATEGIC ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW

309. Hon LYNN MacLAREN to the minister representing the Minister for Planning:

I refer to plans to develop a marina at Point Peron.

(1) Apart from representatives of the Naramya Aboriginal Corporation who were consulted during the strategic environmental review, were members of the local Aboriginal community informed about the plans and how it would affect them?

(2) Is the minister satisfied that the opinions of the three representatives mentioned in the review represent the views of the entire community?

(3) Do the informants of the heritage sites identified at Point Peron live in Medina or Rockingham?

(4) If no to (3), where do they live?

(5) Will the minister table the Aboriginal heritage report used in the Strategen strategic environmental review of February 2006?

Hon ROBYN McSWEENEY replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.

(1) Specific consultation with the local Aboriginal community was through the Naramya Aboriginal Corporation. There was extensive advertising and media coverage at the time of the consultation and also during the strategic environmental review process. No other Aboriginal group or individuals representing the local Aboriginal community have come forward at any time during or following the community forums and briefing sessions that were held as part of that consultation process.

(2) To date there has been no indication that the opinions expressed do not represent the majority view of the local Aboriginal community. However, during phase 2 of the Cape Peron project further consultation is planned for the compilation of a structure plan that will consider all views from the community.

(3)–(4) The identities and residential addresses of the informants have not been disclosed to LandCorp.

(5) The report and all associated documents will be made public once all the information and consultation required to prepare the structure plan has been completed.
