Liberals right to be queasy over shark cull costs and lack of logic

Alternatives to drum lines are gaining such popularity that even Liberal backbenchers are now finding a voice to speak out against culling, says Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren.

"Modern large shark-proof swimming enclosures are just one of a suite of more effective, cost efficient responses to the shark hazard than drum lines," Ms MacLaren said.

"Trialled off the South Metropolitan beach at Coogee, the Eco Shark Barrier won support from hundreds of beach goers.

"It is not surprising that South Metro MPs support eco-shark barriers in preference to culling.

"The Greens support shark-proof enclosures in locations where there is strong backing from the local community and beach-users for their installation.

"While shark-proof enclosures provide peace of mind for nervous swimmers and parents, it should be born in mind that most fatal shark attacks in WA have been on surfers and divers in deeper, offshore waters, where personal and gear-based shark repellent devices may offer the most effective protection.

"The Greens urge the Premier to adopt a more level-headed approach and abandon the costly, lethal drum lines of last year’s knee jerk reaction to a fatal shark incident."
