Greens say proposed new strata property laws target elderly and vulnerable

Greens WA MLC Lynn MacLaren defended the rights of strata property owners by opposing proposed amendments to the Strata Titles Act which would allow people to be forced out of their homes by a 75% vote of owners in a strata titled property.

Greens spokesperson for Housing Lynn MacLaren MLC said Greens in the next Parliament will vote against the amendment, should the proposal reach the debate stage.

“The Liberals’ proposal is an attack on the property rights of strata property owners,” Ms MacLaren said.

“I understand why it is seen to be purely a land grab by greedy developers who will target properties in which they can buy up 75% of a strata titled property and then force out other owners at below market prices.

“These changes may well impact some of the most disadvantaged residents, like seniors on fixed incomes or people with disabilities. These owners and residents alike could be drastically affected, finding themselves forced out of their long-term homes.

“The Liberal party is demonstrating how in bed with greedy property developers it is, and how out of touch it is with ordinary people.”

The Greens will vote against this proposal in the Upper House where hopefully The Greens will have balance of power after the State Election.
