Greens MLC supports flash protest and calls for suspension of licence

Media statement, Friday, 13 December 2013.

The Greens support calls from lively protestors today at the Fremantle Port to suspend the export license of Livestock Shipping Services (LSS) until investigations into the latest horrific evidence of abuse to Australian cattle in Gaza are completed.

Fremantle-based Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren congratulated the nearly 160 protestors for demonstrating at the port at short notice in the summer heat.

“This large and lively flash protest at Fremantle Port serves as another example that the community is strongly opposed to our sheep, cattle and goats treated cruelly,” Ms MacLaren said.

The most recent video footage of Australian cattle facing unbearable torture in Gaza has once again distressed Australians; there is little tolerance for continuing inaction by Government authorities.”

“As more evidence comes to the forefront I continue to say, enough is enough”

“The Maysora ship that was docked at the port today is owned and operated by the same Jordanian company that owns Livestock Shipping Services (LSS), they are under investigation for numerous breaches that led to the abuse of Australian livestock”.

“I call on the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry to suspend the license of LSS until investigations are completed”.

The Greens policy calls for a sustainable alternative with meat processed in abattoirs here in WA.
