Greens applaud Government on medicinal cannabis backflip

Greens spokesperson for Health and Wellbeing Lynn MacLaren MLC has welcomed a State Cabinet decision to give effect to Commonwealth legislation which comes into effect on Tuesday, making medicinal cannabis a controlled prescription drug.

“Coming on board with the Commonwealth is a step in the right direction and I’m pleased the Barnett Government has reversed their archaic position on an issue that has the potential to bring relief to so many,” Ms MacLaren said.

“The Greens have long supported the legalisation of medical marijuana to be prescribed for the alleviation of a number of chronic conditions.

“We know it has been shown to be effective in treating pain, nausea, loss of appetite and other symptoms associated with terminal and very serious and debilitating diseases such as cancer, AIDS, HIV, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury and epilepsy.

“I’m pleased the State Government has fallen into line with the Commonwealth and will enact the necessary regulations.

“This is what the Greens have been saying all along – we need to take a compassionate approach to treating those who are suffering and make all treatment options available to them.

“I look forward to seeing this new industry develop, which will undoubtedly bring huge economic benefits to the State.”
