New survey shows opponents of marriage equality in the minority: Greens

The Greens say a new survey shows increasing support for marriage equality and contradicts a claim by an ALP backbencher that everyday Australians are against same-sex couples marrying the person they love.

"It's pleasing that 68 percent of people questioned say they think gay couples should be allowed to get married, which is up from 62 percent in October last year," Greens' marriage equality spokesperson, Sen. Sarah Hanson-Young, said today.

"Surveys such as this are proof that every time this question is asked, increasing numbers of Australians are in favour of same-sex couples having the marriage rights afforded to heterosexual couples.

"It's an unstoppable force for love and will result in Australia joining other progressive places such as Canada and New York state where same-sex couples have full legal rights to marry.

"This new survey comes weeks ahead of the August 24 discussion in the federal parliament where MPs will report back on the views of their constituents on marriage equality."
