National Week of Action to Ban Live Exports
Hon Lynn MacLaren MLC and Lisa Baker, Member for Maylands
We applaud the actions of Animals Australia and the RSPCA and the resultant outcry by thousands of Australians who demanded an end to cruelty in Indonesian slaughterhouses.
This week we are participating in a National Week of Action to end live exports.
The Australian public have shown their outrage at the images of cruelty aired on Four Corners two weeks ago. Our elected Government must now take action. We believe this is the time to lobby federal MPs to support the bills calling for a ban.
Should the Government falter, we will not hesitate to call to action the strong alliance we have established in Western Australia. The alliance includes not only animal lovers and animal welfare activists but also transport workers, shippers, vets, farmers, and even meat workers. The WA campaign to end live exports has the support of men, women and children of many walks of life. Tens of thousands have petitioned Parliament to phase out the trade.
While we are not involved in the rally announced for Perth, the rallies in other cities on Saturday should demonstrate that Australians everywhere want action to stop the cruelty.
