Marriage equality protestors make their voice heard

Momentum keeps growing for equal marriage rights. The most recent Equal Love rally attracted hundreds of men and women of all ages. A march through the city followed passionate speeches in Forest Place.

Hon Lynn MacLaren MLC acknowledged the long hard work from many campaigners on law reform including Giz Watson MLC, John Hyde MLA and especially now Senator Louise Pratt.

She called on the ALP to support the Greens federal Bill for Marriage Equality before handing the mic to Lisa Baker, MLA who took up the challenge and reported that the ALP state party was already on side. The next step is getting the federal conference in December to agree.

Lynn noted the power and effectiveness of humour in breaking down prejudice. She recounted some of the recent humorous campaign slogans, including "If you don't like gay marriage, don't marry a gay" from a poster seen on a New York train. And an online poster from .... which reads "I think the issue of gay marriage is really about Marriage. I mean, like, I had lunch this afternoon, I didn't have GAY lunch. And I parked my car today, I didn't GAY park..."

Lynn finished her speech by pledging to stand beside and support those students and young people who are suffering discrimination and bullying today, almost a decade after WA's historic law reforms.
