Fremantle cleans up at the State Heritage Awards

The Greens spokesperson for Heritage, Fremantle based MP Lynn MacLaren, has congratulated the many groups working hard to maintain and develop Fremantle’s heritage, after Fremantle groups and businesses won a total of four awards at last night’s State Heritage Awards.

“Fremantle heritage is highly valued so it’s great that these groups are awarded this recognition,” said Ms MacLaren.

The Fremantle Society and the Fremantle Prison received top honours at the Awards ceremony for outstanding contribution to heritage by community and public organisations. Fremantle Prison also received best heritage tourism product.

Meanwhile, the B-Shed Ferry Terminal was named the outstanding adaptive reuse project of the year due to the clever design and excellent use of interpretation material and historical imagery.

Unfortunately the Awards ceremony lacked any real recognition of the custodians of Aboriginal heritage.

“The absence of any awards for custodians of Aboriginal heritage is disappointing. We need to do more to recognise cultural and Aboriginal heritage,” concluded Ms MacLaren.
