Climate Change Policy in WA - UWA Seminar
The Institute of Advanced Studies at The University of Western Australia invites you to a free seminar:
Climate Change Policy in WA, Australia and the World: What Next?
After the widely perceived failure of the Copenhagen climate change conference, the absence of any post-2012 international climate change agreement and an Australian emissions trading scheme now deferred until at least 2013, what’s next for climate change policy in WA, Australia and the world?
In a federal election year what political strategies will need to be adopted to make greater progress on tackling climate change?
This seminar – held at The University of Western Australia in association with the Institute of Advanced Studies – brings together participants from government, business, academia and the non-profit sector to examine these questions.
Issues to be discussed at the seminar include:
- Commonwealth climate change policy after the CPRS
- The role now for the Australian states, WA in particular
- Merits of instruments other than an emissions trading scheme – a carbon tax, for example, or direct regulation
- Business perspectives on climate change policy in 2010 and beyond
- Renewable energy and energy policy
- Is it time to seriously consider nuclear power in Australia?
- The prospects for COP 17 in December 2010 in Cancun, Mexico
Speakers include:
- Winthrop Professor Alex Coram, Political Science and International Relations, UWA
- Professor Richard Harper, Alcoa Chair in Sustainable Water Resource Management, Murdoch University
- David Hodgkinson, Executive Director, EcoCarbon, Inc and Associate Professor, Law School, UWA.
